20 yr-old Somali man arrested for plotting to blow up St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican

A 20-year-old man from Somali has been arrested by police in Italy on suspicion of planning to bomb churches in the country including the famous St. Peter’s Basilica. Omar Moshin Ibrahim, who has been staying in Italy since 2016, was arrested on Thursday, December 13, and arraigned in court on Monday, December 17, where he was charged with instigating and supporting terrorism.

According to police investigations in the southern city of Bari, Omar was stopped after a month-long surveillance on his activities and operations in the town where he was working for a cleaning company, as reported by Telegraph.

In one of the communications made by Omar, he was heard telling the person on the other end of the line to put bombs in all churches in Italy.

“Let’s put bombs in all the churches of Italy. Where is the largest church? It is in Rome.”

In another conversation, he was heard hailing recent killings in Italy in which one man shot dead five people at a market in Strasbourg Christmas saying they were killed on the path of Allah.

Omar was suspected of having been a militant of Islamic State prior to his movement into Italy.

Following the incident police have beefed security around churches in Italy ahead of Christmas where many people are expected to gather in churches especially in the St. Peter’s Basilica.
