Ksh 40B KDF Arms Scandal takes a new twist after Echesa’s Win in Court

Former Sports CS Rashid Echesa has been allowed to change his terms of freedom, substituting his Ksh1 million cash bail with Ksh 2 million bond.

The former CS was released on February 17, 2020, after being charged with 12 counts ranging from forgery, obtaining money by false pretence to impersonating senior government officials in a Ksh 39.5 billion firearms scandal.

A report by People Daily on Wednesday, May 20, added that the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji was also issued a two-day deadline to respond to Echesa’s demands by Senior Principal Magistrate Kennedy Cheru.

Echesa was also tied to the death of Sergeant Kipyegon Kenei, a security officer attached to Deputy President William Ruto’s Harambee Annex office.

CCTV footage aired by DCI boss George Kinoti, showed a figure believe to be Echesa arriving for a 1-hour meeting in Ruto’s office as opposed to the DP’s claims that his ally spent only 23 minutes at Annex.

“ODP does NOT procure for any ministry/department. Question: other than 23 minutes in Annex, for months, which government offices involved in the ‘tender’ did the scammers visit? Did they access DOD? Who facilitated? Who did they meet? Get the truth. Forget the sponsored nonsense in media,” a tweet by DP Ruto on February 15, read.

Kinoti alleged that Kenei, who was buried on Saturday, March 7, did not commit suicide but was murdered, in connection with the arms scandal.
