Eliud Kipchoge Appointed 2024 Olympics Ambassador

Tokyo 2020 Olympics marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge has landed one of the most coveted ambassadorial roles in world athletics, the 2024 Paris Olympic Games ambassador.

The new appointment means that elite marathon runners will have a chance to wrestle his title away from him yet again in Paris, France following his dominance in the Tokyo edition held between the end of July and the start of August 2021.

To start off his new role, athletes will have a chance to compete against him through a 5km race with an original format, in Paris, on October 31, 2021, 1,000 days before the Paris Games.

The 5-kilometre race will see him go toe-to-toe with 2,000 runners during the event that will be held at the Champs-Elysées, in a truly exceptional setting at the heart of Paris.

“As a proud ambassador of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games I am excited to say that for the first time in history, the marathon will be open to everyone! You can earn your bib to run on the same day and on the same course as the elite athletes.
“For those who will be in Paris, France this October 31, come and challenge me on “Les Champs-Elysées” and let’s see if you can beat me for a chance to win your bib!” he announced.

The race will see him cover a longer distance than the rest of the runners and he will need to work extra hard to catch up with them.

The participants, who will be split into different groups, will be tasked with holding off Eliud Kipchoge’s relentless pursuit that will test to the limit their mental strength needed to run a marathon.

They will then head off from the Champs-Elysées with their entry for the Paris 2024 Mass Participation Marathon, which will take place on the same day as the Olympics marathon.

Amateur athletes in the mass event will for the first time follow the same route as the Olympics race just hours later.

Kipchoge has been going from strength to strength at the age of 36 and has been landing deals nationwide and globally.

He was featured in a global campaign by sportswear giant Nike in August, a campaign that has been graced by many sportsmen and women from across the world.

#PlayNew is a marketing campaign by Nike that seeks to encourage people to discover sports in new ways. Adding Kipchoge into the campaign just adds to the motivating spark for aspiring human beings to venture fearlessly into the world of sports.

The New Global campaign captures some of the world’s top athletes such as Dina Asher-Smith and award-winning artist Rosalía. It also brings forth elite athletes, footballers, and other sportsmen from different continents, with Eliud Kipchoge flying the Kenyan flag high.

He reminded the whole world of his greatness in the marathon races as he retained his Olympic marathon gold by finishing in a time of 2:08:38 on Sunday, August 8 in Sapporo, Japan.
