Nurses have come out to hit back at Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe claiming that he humiliated them by making public their English test results.

The Nurses Union claimed that the move by the Cabinet Secretary to make public their English competency test results have exposed them to public ridicule and could affect their confidence

Their statement comes two days after CS Kagwe revealed that out of 300 nurses who sat for the mandatory English language proficiency test, only 10 passed.

The CS said that the nurses must retake the test and pass it before they are allowed to seek employment in the United Kingdom.

In their defence, the nurses noted that the results released by Kagwe was not factual and there is no way the nurse could fail the test.

“I don’t agree that nurses failed the English test. All these years nurses have been in school, they speak and are taught in English. It should come with facts,” Kenya Union of Nurses Deputy Secretary-General Morris Opetu said.

The secretary-general further noted it was the action by the CS to make the results public was uncalled for as they were supposed to be private and confidential.

Opetu further noted that it was not accurate for the CS to say the nurses failed the test as they were never given enough time to revise for the test.

“For you to prepare for and take an exam successfully, you must be given at least two months to prepare. This was not done. Therefore, I don’t agree with the CS statement that Kenyans failed the English test,” said Opetu.
