Family of a man who is still trapped in Siaya goldmines now cries out after they were neglected by County Government

The family of John Akwach, 29, who is yet to be retrieved from Abimbo goldmine in Siaya County is calling on the government to help them.

According to the family, the rescue team and the county government of Siaya have neglected them following the incident that happened 10 days ago.

“Since Monday when the three people were retrieved from the collapsed shaft, fuel has been a problem and the machines work occasionally. Those who were being involved in the work of ensuring they’re removed got tired and left. There is no food, people cannot work without food,” Akwach’s brother narrated.

“There’s an opportunity of retrieving my brother,” he continued.

They have given their pleas to the national government to at least fund them and enable them to retrieve him.

According to colleagues of Tom Okwach, the father of two last spoke to them on Thursday, December 9, giving them a signal that he was alive at the time.

The colleagues, who appeared lethargic because of spending sleepless nights trying to evacuate Okwach, noted that there has been no communication from him after Thursday.

They pointed out that the place where Okwach is situated was flooded by water before the mine caved in ten days ago. This has made the soil too weak for any vibrations and movement.

“When we tried to aid in lifting him out of the mine, the walls collapsed, hence leading us to begin the whole operation again.”

This comes as another three miners were rescued on Wednesday morning, December 8. The gold miners were pulled out of the ground at 2 am and rushed to the Bondo Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
