”I want to give HELB last WARNING to give COMRADES HELB by next week WEDNESDAY. Failure to which, all comrades will hold DEMONSTRATIONS in various CAMPUSES across the country. I will lead DEMONSTRATIONS in NAIROBI on THURSDAY next week” Twitted Babu Owino
Babu Owino claims a majority of students have suffered to an extent where some ”students are dying of Hunger” due to late disbursement.
”Release HELB to COMRADES or WE Release on you…Students are dying of Hunger”. added Babu Owino who was a one-time student leader at the University of Nairobi.
But after intense pressure, the loans board succumbed to it and disbursed money to the selected institution.
The board had earlier said More than 75,000 university freshers would failed to get State loans after it ran out of cash, setting them up for a tough life at the beginning of their studies.
Helb said the freshers, who joined public universities in September, will have to wait till the Treasury offers it Sh3 billion for initial disbursement.
“Right now we have 75,000 first-year students that are yet to be funded and we require Sh3 billion to process their applications,” Helb chief finance officer Mary Wachira told the National Assembly Committee on Education during the review of the national budget.
