I’m Not in UDA!~Alfred Mutua Declares

Governor Alfred Mutua of Machakos County has dismissed United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party Chairman Johnstone Muthama’s earlier comments about his unwillingness to work with him as “sideshows.”

Muthama, who has been at odds with the county boss for a long time, had expressed reservations about working with him, citing their long political rivalry.

Mutua downplayed Muthama’s sentiments, claiming that he joined the Kenya Kwanza coalition to support Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential bid rather than compete with Muthama.

He clarified that his Monday move was to the coalition rather than the DP Ruto-led UDA party, which Muthama chairs, and that there was no need for a rift.

“Johnstone Muthama is the Chairman of UDA; I am not in UDA, hio ni mambo ya UDA, I am in Kenya Kwanza with Ruto, Mudavadi and others,” Mutua said in an interview with KTN News on Wednesday night.

He added: “I will not be drawn into sideshows, the main show for me is getting votes for one William Ruto, getting the people of Ukamabani and from every corner of the country to understand that the mistakes of 60 years of the country cannot be repeated.”

Muthama, skipped the Tuesday rally in the county which was graced by the Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader after being welcomed to the coalition.

He later said that their long-lived dispute in the political arena had led to his absence calling upon Mutua to seek reconciliation and ask for forgiveness.

“Niliamua kutohudhuria mkutano ya jana kwa sababu ya mambo fulani. Kwanza mimi na Mutua tuna shida na si shida ya kibinafsi, ni shida ya uongozi,” the lawmaker had said.

“Ikiwa tutakaa na yeye na kuzungumza na akubali kwenda mbele ya watu wa Machakos na kusema haya ni ya kweli na naomba msamaha, hapo nitatembea na Mutua,” he added.

Dr Mutua, for his part, retaliated by saying that he was more concerned with drumming up support for the DP ahead of the August elections than with dealing with the legislator’s issues.

“We need to be in a safe pair of hands with a person who has the energy and the transformative ability to change our lives,” Mutua said.
